The roar of engines, the smell of salt air, and hundreds of thousands of fellow riders lining the Grand Strand — Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Week is one of the most celebrated motorcycle rallies in the country, and it’s almost here. The 87th Annual Spring Rally runs May 8–17, 2026, and we expect the energy to be bigger than ever.
At Morris Law Accident Injury Lawyers, we love seeing the motorcycle community come alive along South Carolina’s coast every spring. We also know, from years of representing injured riders, that the excitement of rally week can come with real risks. Before you hit the road, we want to make sure you’re riding smart — and that you know your rights if something goes wrong.
A Tradition Like No Other
Myrtle Beach Bike Week has been welcoming riders since 1940, growing from a modest gathering on the sand into one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the United States. Today, the ten-day event draws between 300,000 and 500,000 bikers and enthusiasts from across the country, stretching the full length of the Grand Strand — from North Myrtle Beach all the way down to Georgetown, South Carolina.
Whether you’re cruising the coastline, hitting spots like Suck Bang Blow, the Rat Hole, or your nearest Harley-Davidson dealership, or participating in events like the Veterans’ Ride, Spring Bike Week offers something for every rider. It’s a reunion, a celebration, and a reminder of why so many of us fell in love with the open road.
The Roads Get More Dangerous During Rally Week
Here’s the reality: more bikes on the road means more chances for accidents. During major motorcycle rallies, traffic volumes spike dramatically, and not all drivers on the road are experienced riding alongside motorcycles — or paying the attention they should.
In South Carolina, motorcycle accidents are already a serious concern. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, more than 100 motorcyclists lose their lives in crashes in the state each year. During a high-traffic event like Spring Bike Week, the risk only grows.
The most common causes of motorcycle accidents during rally season include:
Left-turn collisions — A driver misjudges your speed or simply doesn’t see you and turns directly into your path.
Distracted driving — With so much going on during rally week, distracted and inattentive drivers are a constant hazard.
Impaired driving — Late nights and open bars are part of the rally culture. Not everyone on the road is riding or driving sober.
Road hazards — Sand, gravel, uneven pavement, and debris from heavy traffic can spell disaster for a motorcycle that would otherwise handle it fine.
Aggressive or reckless drivers — Congested roads and impatient motorists are a dangerous combination.
If you’re involved in an accident that wasn’t your fault, you have the right to hold the at-fault driver accountable.
Know the Law Before You Ride
Bike Week or not, South Carolina law applies to everyone on the road. Here are a few key rules riders should keep in mind:
- Helmet law: Riders and passengers under 21 are required to wear a helmet in South Carolina. Those 21 and older are not legally required to wear one, though we always recommend it.
- Both hands on the handlebars: South Carolina law requires riders to keep both hands on the bars at all times. Carrying anything that prevents this is illegal.
- No lane splitting: Lane splitting is prohibited under South Carolina law.
- Footrests required: Both the operator and any passenger must have proper footrests.
- Rear-view mirrors: Required for all motorcycles.
- No open containers: Open containers of alcohol in vehicles or in public areas are strictly prohibited.
- Alcohol: You must be 21 or older to consume alcohol. This is actively enforced during the rally.
- Speeding and traffic laws: Enforcement is strict in the Myrtle Beach area during rally week. Ride within the law.
What to Do If You’re Involved in an Accident
If you’re injured in a motorcycle crash during Spring Bike Week — or any time in South Carolina — here’s what you should do:
- Get to safety and call 911. Your health and safety come first. Get medical attention immediately, even if you feel okay. Some injuries don’t appear right away.
- Document the scene. If you’re physically able, take photos of the vehicles involved, your injuries, road conditions, and any skid marks or debris.
- Get witness information. Contact details from anyone who saw the accident can be critical to your case.
- Don’t admit fault. Be careful about what you say at the scene. Even a casual “I’m sorry” can be used against you later.
- Contact a motorcycle accident attorney. The sooner you speak with a lawyer, the better. Evidence disappears quickly, and insurance companies will begin building their case right away.
